Hindle Wakes : Factory girls Fanny Hawthorn and Mary Hollins decide to take their vacation at Blackpool, Britain's version of Coney Island. There Fanny meets Allan, the wealthy son of factory owner Nathaniel Jeffcote, The two impetuously ditch Mary to spend time alone. When her family discovers what has occurred, they confront Nathaniel, who forces his son to propose marriage to the girl. Fanny's decision shocks everyone... In filming this popular stage play, director Maurice Elvey decided to provide a complete back-story. In doing so, he liberated the film from the conventions of the theater. Using the actual mills in Lancashire gives the film an astonishing documentary realism while the moving camera flying in and around Blackpool's famed rides like the plunging Big-Dipper and Helter-Skelter and climbing the heights of the Tower is as good as any in the history of cinema. When Stanley Houghton's play opened in 1912, a near-riot broke out in London. Famed anarchist Emma Goldman proclaimed it as one of the most important advancements in liberating women from society's sexual double standards. Even today, F...

The Tin Drum by Gunter Grass, ISBN 067972575X : Acclaimed as the greatest German novel written since the end of World War II, The Tin Drum is the autobiography of thirty-year-old Oskar Matzerath, who has lived through the long Nazi nightmare and who, as the novel begins, is being held in a mental institution. Willfully stunting his growth at three feet for many years, wielding his tin drum and piercing scream as anarchistic weapons, he provides a profound yet hilarious perspective on both German history and the human condition in the modern world. Translated from the German by Ralph Manheim.

Murder on Marble Row : When New York City Police Commissioner Theodore Roosevelt becomes convinced that anarchists are responsible for the death of a wealthy industrialist, Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy must turn to his unrequited love, midwife Sarah Brandt, to catch a killer.

The Man Who Was Thursday by G. K. Chesterton, ISBN 0375757910 : G. K. Chesterton's surreal masterpiece is a psychological thriller that centers on seven anarchists in turn-of-the-century London who call themselves by the names of the days of the week. Chesterton explores the meanings of their disguised identities in what is a fascinating mystery and, ultimately, a spellbinding allegory. As Jonathan Lethem remarks in his Introduction, The real characters are the ideas. Chesterton's nutty agenda is really quite simple: to expose moral relativism and parlor nihilism for the devils he believes them to be. This wouldn't be interesting at all, though, if he didn't also show such passion for giving the devil his due. He animates the forces of chaos and anarchy with every ounce of imaginative verve and rhetorical force in his body.

Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates by Tom Robbins, ISBN 055337933X : Switters is a contradiction for all seasons: an anarchist who works for the government; a pacifist who carries a gun; a vegetarian who sops up ham gravy; a cyberwhiz who hates computers; a man who, though obsessed with the preservation of innocence, is aching to deflower his high-school-age stepsister (only to become equally enamored of a nun ten years his senior). Yet there is nothing remotely wishy-washy about Switters. He doesn't merely pack a pistol. He is a pistol. And as we dog Switters's strangely elevated heels across four continents, in and out of love and danger, discovering in the process the "true" Third Secret of Fatima, we experience Tom Robbins -- that fearless storyteller, spiritual renegade, and verbal break dancer -- at the top of his game. On one level this is a fast-paced CIA adventure story with comic overtones; on another it's a serious novel of ideas that brings the Big Picture into unexpected focus; but perhaps more than anything else, Fierce Invalids is a sexy celebration of language and life.
